With the first vineyards planted in the 1970s, third generation owner David Sonnenberg built his own cellar and started producing award-winning estate wines in 2000, of which Diemersfontein’s trademark, the original coffee and chocolate Pinotage has become one of SA’s most popular. Over the years, the entire Diemersfontein’s wine range has received the highest recognition, both locally and internationally, including Gold and Double Gold at the latest Michelangelo Awards, Gold at the IWSC (International Wine & Spirit Competition), Gold at the CWSA (China Wine & Spirit Awards) as well as best white wine and 2nd, 3rd and 4th best red wines at the latest RMB Winex.
Set amidst the breathtaking Cape Winelands scenery of Paarl and Wellington, Diemersfontein offers idyllic farm estate living to both visitors and residents: tourists can stay either at the majestic Manor House, the quaint Garden Cottages overlooking the Diemersfontein gardens, or at the spacious Thokozani cottages, while the estate (and its recently added “The Village”) is home to approximately 100 resident families.
Fresh local cuisine, stunning Cape Winelands scenery on a working wine estate and a classic, informal interior offer the perfect setting to taste and pair Diemersfontein wines.
BBBEE has flowed naturally from owner David Sonnenberg’s wish to make a sustainable community contribution. “The two go in parallel because you can’t build a business without building the team,” he says. In 2007, Diemersfontein launched its empowerment company, Thokozani, with staff shareholders. Each worker, with at least one year’s service and a willingness to participate, was given shares in Thokozani depending on their seniority. Thokozani’s Ovation range was developed in collaboration with Woolworths, and is available at Woolworths stores nationwide.
Weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or more formal conferencing and corporate functions – every special occasion turns into an unforgettable event at the Diemersfontein Wine & Country Estate.
Pinotage On Tap – or “Pot” as it’s more often referred to, is an annual wine festival not only unique in its style, but unrivalled in the industry! This event won the title of “The Best Wine Event in the World” awarded by Drinks International Tourism Awards in London. What makes this “cult-like” event so unique, is that Pinotage On Tap originated when Diemersfontein realized what a terrific fan following their Coffee & Chocolate Pinotage was developing! In an attempt to spoil these fans, Diemersfontein held the first Pinotage On Tap party (2003), which was all based around the single idea of having this delectable wine, free flowing and served quite literally – from the barrel tap!
