Pinotage On Tap – or “Pot” as it’s more often referred to, is an annual wine festival not only unique in its style, but unrivalled in the industry! This event won the title of “The Best Wine Event in the World” awarded by Drinks International Tourism Awards in London.
What makes this “cult-like” event so unique, is that Pinotage On Tap originated when Diemersfontein realized what a terrific fan following their Coffee & Chocolate Pinotage was developing! In an attempt to spoil these fans, Diemersfontein held the first Pinotage On Tap party (2003), which was all based around the single idea of having this delectable wine, free flowing and served quite literally – from the barrel tap!
From then on it became an annual instalment. Hosted every year we celebrate the latest harvest of our “Original Coffee Pinotage” with barrels of Pinotage and an abundance of foods that best compliment the wine. These events are held in 3-4 locations, namely Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town (on the farm itself) Popular live music bands add the perfect vibe to the occasion, with a splash of fun and games for all to enjoy. (We can’t tell all, or we’ll be giving away our formula!)
Diemersfontein’s flag carrier, “The Original Coffee Chocolate Pinotage” (or as some may say “the people’s Pinotage”) introduced its maiden vintage in 2001 as a somewhat questionable style of wine at the time, it wasn’t long before it took wine lovers throughout the world by storm!
Praised for its uniqueness, yet easy and relatable accessibility. The rich coffee & smokey overtones on the nose and voluptuous fruit on the palate, along with cinnamon and chocolaty notes on the palate, make this wine completely irresistible! It is vivacious, velvety and versatile, allowing it to be paired with a range of different foods – such as curries, game, steak and even dark chocolate desserts.
It easily appeals to new wine drinkers, who have not previously been red wine enthusiasts, but they find it such an easy introduction to the world of red wines – a true midwife to drinking pleasure!
Feedback often received from our fans include “you have shown us for the first time how wonderful Pinotage can be!”, and yet many experienced wine drinkers choose it for being somewhat different to just any Pinotage. Because of its controversial style, it often raises strong feelings, and some even feel the need to criticize it quite heavily! We don’t mind this of course – because either way, no one can just ignore it! Different from its sibling the more classic Carpe Diem Pinotage which has won the SA Red Wine Trophy at the International Wine Challenge – Owner David Sonnenberg comments: “I feel like the parent of two teenage daughters – one is a classically trained violinist who dresses modestly and draws crowds to exclusive concert halls; whilst the other, a mini-skirted and occasionally provocative little pop star, wows the younger generation but has fans of all ages”.
Due to the fame that this wine has developed over the years, it even has its very own fan club – it inspires loyalty, passion, and dare we say it – some seriously committed regular imbibers!
The REAL story behind Pinotage on Tap …
Every year, thousands come and celebrate the new vintage launched at our fun-filled Pinotage-on-Tap festivals. It is referred to as the best party on the winelands calendar, which explains how it also won top accolade for The Best Wine Event in the World, by Drinks International.
The Diemersfontein Original Coffee Chocolate Pinotage is a young wine made to be drunk early. We bottle each year in July or August – after an oaky immersion for just five months. Ready to enjoy soon thereafter – and though you can reserve it a little, – it’s at its best in the first year or two. (However, fans don’t generally wait that long!)
No wine is ever exactly the same year on year, and we do taste some vintage variation. The fans of course love to argue about their favourites and the merits of each. But we will always maintain the essential features of this phenomenal wine – the consistency that comes from using only the highest quality grapes from the Wellington region and the same fermentation and oak maturation process every year.
Over the past 15 vintages, this unique Pintage has received numerous awards and accolades. It was quite literally out of the starting blocks when it won a place in the ABSA Top Ten, followed shortly thereafter with a Trophy at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards for best Pinotage, silver at Wine Style Asia, Silver in Nova Scotia, Michelangelo Gold 2006, and the list continued to grow. One of the best acknowledgements included when in April 2007, Neil Pendock christened it “The People’s Pinotage” after his consumer survey in the South African Sunday Times found that it was the “overwhelming favorite” of all Pinotages! Since then the people have spoken again by voting it “The Best Red Wine on Show” at Winex in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2008/9/10, and the awards continue today.
Diemersfontein Pinotage is available throughout South Africa, and can be found in most popular outlets in each province. Please refer to our national and international agents and stockists’ information.
