An hour-and-a-half’s drive from Cape Town is all you need to reach the delightful town of Wellington which is also surrounded by beautiful mountains and vineyards. I have over the years been pleasantly surprised with the increasing quality of the wines produced from this region and especially with their Shiraz’s and Chenin Blancs.
The inaugural UK Pinotage on Tap festival was a huge success and with the weather being so beautiful, it truly marked the advent of the start of summer (something we could finally gloat about to friends back home).
Pinotage on tap all day? And in the sun? Probably a normal weekend for South Africans back home, but last weekend, for the first time, Diemersfontein Estate Wine ventured north of the equator and held their annual launch of their new vintage in the scenic countryside of West Sussex.
One of the hot—and, to some, unfortunate—wine trends these days is adding coffee or coffee flavoring to wines. But one of the hottest wines at the recent New York Wine Expo was one that had coffee characteristics without actually containing any java.
Instead, The Pinotage, from South African winery Diemersfontain, possesses a distinct coffee aroma, winery owner David Sonnenberg told me, through the way the wine is made, including the selection and handling of the grapes and type of oak barrel used in its aging.
Just recently I went to the Jacob Javits Center to attend the New York Wine Expo. This event happens once a year in tandem with the Restaurant Show. It’s an event where wine producers from around the world has the opportunity to share their creations with the public and members of the trade. I went on the trade only day. And it’s a perfect time todiscover those wonderful gems of wines from other regions that you might not normally have the chance to find.
Once a year, in October, excited whispers start circulating the streets of Cape Town – “Pinotage on Tap is coming!” The level of excitement that this festival generates is really something, especially considering how many wine festivals and farms there are in the greater Cape Town area.
But the excitement is for a good cause. Each year, Diemersfontein farm opens its gates to a flood of pinotage lovers, who descend on the farm for one of the best days of the year – no exaggeration. Barrels of their famous chocolate-flavoured pinotage are set up and flow freely all day, there are Lindt ladies walking around handing out free chocolates, you’re fed all day and bands serenade the guests all afternoon.
With the tally of South African wines now exceeding 7,000, the uniquely comprehensive Platter’s Wine Guide 2012 is the wine lover’s indispensable “sat-nav”, showing the way through the maze of available brands and pinpointing the best quality and value.
Published since 1980, Platter’s is the original and still favourite guide to who's who and what's what in South Africa’s winelands. The 32nd edition, launched today (8 November), features more than 900 South African wine producers, merchants and brands, including 58 new ones, and over 7,000 locally produced wines.
What an awesome weekend! So much good stuff. Friday night we had a chilled braai with Nash's folks and took things easy in anticipation of an event we'd been looking forward to for months: Diemersfontein Pinotage On Tap. I've been a passionate lover of Diemersfontein Pinotage since the first time I tasted it, so the thought of a full day of as much of it as I could drink was enough to keep the butterflies in my tummy awake on Friday night.
